Happy Wednesday, fellow reading addicts!
There are a few more days until Valentine’s Day. Do you have any special plans with your sweetheart the day of (or before or after)? Mine lives in another country, so he’ll get spammed with memes and cards throughout the day. And I know he’ll be doing the same to me the day before and day of (he’s a future living type, all the way in Australia).
Last week, I walked into a real book store for the first time in more than a year. Decided it was time to complete my Wheel of Time series and got books 13 and 14. I started watching the series and while it’s been decades since I’ve read the first 12 books, and I know some things are very different than the books, I like what they’ve done so far and sort of understand the changes. And it reminded me I hadn’t read the last two books in the series, so it was time to finish them. Also picked up some research books as well to help with what I am writing.

WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE.
If New York is the city that never sleeps, then L.A. is the city where you have to sleep with one eye open.
Michael Andrews learns quickly that it’s not just the cut-throat world of Hollywood you need to fear. There’s something deeper, darker, and far more disturbing lurking just beneath the shadows of the city, waiting for any moment of vulnerability to grab you by the throat.
An extended trip to Los Angeles to be on set for the movie adaptation of his latest novel leads Michael into a twisted and macabre underworld where he becomes entangled with an intriguing, sexy, and mysterious woman. At times she seems just what he needs in order to finally get over the unrequited love of his ex-girlfriend; but at other times, she appears to be the gateway to a Pandora’s box of B-movie nightmares.
Can he trust her? Can he trust himself with her?
Michael’s supernatural wolf-enhanced powers and special abilities might not be enough to survive this particular harsh and gritty jungle and the unique and deadly predators that crawl out of the shadows.
Rebel is set in the same universe as the United Federation Marine Corps series, and while the Marines make an appearance, this book is not about Ryck Lysander or the Corps.
Michiko MacCailín is a member of the First Families, more concerned with her privileged lifestyle of ballet, spending time with friends, and planning her wedding than of the injustices suffered by the indentured workers of the all-powerful Propitious Interstellar Fabrication, Inc., the charter holder of the planet. When her activist fiancé is murdered at a protest rally, she blames the company and embarks on a personal mission of vengeance.
Michi has some initial, if minor success, but when the company requests that the Federation send in the Marine Corps to quell the unrest, the stakes immediately get higher. Undeterred, Michi is not going to let the Marines keep her from extracting her revenge.
WARNING: This book contains some graphic violence that may not be suitable for all readers.
AUTHOR’S NOTE: Rebel is set in the same universe as the first three books in The United Federation Marine Corps series, and a few of the characters in those three books make brief appearances in this one. However, this is a decidedly different book, examining what it might be like on the other side of a Federation Marine deployment. The battle scenes are limited, and the violence is much more visceral and personal. This is a darker, deeper book and not your typical “Space Marine” story.
Rebel will tie into future volumes of the series that will put the focus back on the Marines, but it is a departure from the first three volumes.
